Los Angeles Initially Approves $15.37 Minimum Wage for Workers of Large LA Hotels

Los Angeles officials give initial nod on Wednesday on the propose $15.37 an hour wage increase for large hotel workers in the city.

The Los Angeles City Council approved the proposal by a vote of 12-3 and it is subject to a final vote next week.

If approved, the $15.37 an hour ordinance would take effect on July 1, 2015 for hotels with 300 or more rooms and for establishments with at least 150 rooms on 2016.

Currently, the California overall minimum wage is at $9 an hour.

Mayor Eric Garcetti said he would sign the ordinance if it reaches his desk to make LA as one of the cities with highest minimum wage in the county.

Meanwhile, the hotel industry officials raised opposition saying workers who receive tips should be excluded in the wage increase.

It also warned that higher wage floor could lead some hotels to lay off employees and discourage expansion of business.
